Why it is made this way

We feed our dogs better than we feed ourselves.

Mine ate lamb and rice for a decade. So when it came time to decide what goes in the tin, the question was never what costs the least.

What goes in

Organic shea butter, coconut oil, beeswax, jojoba oil and calendula. All five. Every one of them costs more than the conventional version of the same thing. We buy them anyway.

What stays out

No petroleum. No filler to make the tin feel heavier than it is. No fragrance to cover anything up. No essential oils.

Why there's no vitamin E

You'll see vitamin E in a lot of balms, so you might wonder why ours doesn't have it. It sounds like it does a lot, but in a balm its main job is shelf life, keeping the oils from going stale. Ours doesn't need the help: jojoba and beeswax are naturally stable. And we couldn't find an organic vitamin E that didn't come mixed with another carrier oil we'd have to add to the label. So we left it out.

Why that matters

A dog licks her paws. Leaving the essential oils out is the reason the lick-safe line on the label is a fact and not a hope.

Nothing in this tin is in it because it was cheap.
